W7 D1: Supposedly a hill run actually a “threshold” run

So yesterday was the first opportunity since starting training to meet up with another HavensRunner (Neil Dobson) and as he is a faster runner than me I was looking forward to doing a session at a slightly quicker pace. Before meeting up we had chatted about the pace I was looking to do and I’d asked to try run it at an 8:30 pace which should see me complete a sub 4 hour Mara.

He works about 2.5Miles from where I do so I opted to do a warmup on the run over to him and then follow it up with a faster run from Knightsbridge to Liv St where both of us would part, him back to Southend and me to Woodford.

From my watch it looks like the warmup was at the 830 pace I was after following that my intentions for a sub 830 were certainly achieved…

So pretty much straight away I realised this wasn’t going to be the run I’m used to, the weather was shocking the route was (in place) water logged so much so that my shoes are now out of service for today and also Neil is a lot quicker than me! Looking at the stats, we were a lot closer to 8min Miles than 830 which is incredible – that’s not to say I could maintain it as it was apparent in the final mile or so my speed was dropping but even during that mile it was an 8:20 which I cant grumble about.

My watch reported me as having covered 10M in 1h25 which includes waiting around at Knightsbridge to meet Neil. I was shattered as we got to the station but adrenaline was certainly up – ready for the next one now!

W5 D4 The long run that didnt happen…

I’m glad I played with my running schedule now and did my long run on weds as it wasn’t poss on Sat/Sun to fit the 12M in. I did however manage 6 or so miles on the dreadmill which was fairly uneventful – as usual!

With that treadmill session in mind it means I ran about 30M last week with no issues which is good.

W6 takes me over to niketown again for a 7miler as well as (weather dependent) a run to work picking up a colleague on route to push me through the final few miles…busy week of running – let’s hope the predicted snow keeps away!

Till Tuesday…

I’m English so lets complain about the weather….

“It’s too hot”…I’m sure almost every runner out there have usesd this line at least once in their lifetime, alongside “it was rainy/windy/icy etc”. It seems like a bloody good excuse and once you get this excuse into your brain whilst out it’s a challenge to get it out – this weekend I failed!

sun-rays-coming-out-of-the-clouds-in-a-blue-sky-sustainable-use-of-lightHaving faffed a little and had a relatively long lie in (for me) I didn’t manage to get out the door until about 11am. At this point the demons were already telling me not to bother but fortunately I had the willpower to ignore those ones. Having barely made it to the bottom of the road I knew instantly today was going to be hot (well hot for England anyway) and stuffy and at this point I was trying to work out how I could cut my run short thinking things like “maybe I’ll just do 5km – it doesn’t really matter how far I go anyway, I’m not really working towards anything”.

The route I chose was the much flatter Longfield track along 1 road and then turning back on myself. I ran it once during my marathon training and remember thinking it was a little dull and not quite as flat as you would expect it to be. However, it was this or the hill route of last week an for some reason that route really wasn’t appealing to me that morning.

I got to 4km a couple of km’s short of where I turned on my last attempt and decided that that would be a good turning point. I could add a km at the other end easily taking the run up to a currently respectable 9km and what’s one km between friends anyway! Turning back on myself I reran exactly the same path (Ive never been a fan of tracking back on yourself I’d much rather a loop…) that said it has a little scenery including a few fields with horses, there was also a mirror on the route which provided a rather amusing annecdote but I don’t think I can do the story (or my stupidity) any justice on this blog… » Continue reading “I’m English so lets complain about the weather….”
